Project Process
1. Material Research
Cement
I began this project by doing material research and I decided that I wanted to work with cement.
Cement is more energy-efficient compared with plastic. It is strong, durable and it can shoulder heavy loads.
I think that the use of cement should not be limited to construction. There is great potential for this material. It provides the designer with an unlimited vocabulary of expression. I wanted to see how far I could push the boundaries in using this material with lighting design.
2. Material Experiments
In my quest to create a new material to work with for my design, I experimented with combining different materials to see how they look and feel, and what effect is created when light passes through it.
I chose a combination of cement and cotton. I believe it is an innovative new combination with great potential that creates an unexpected look with soft and hard material.
3. Sketch Model
This concept expresses the relationship between light and shadow and creates a cozy atmosphere. It is a chandelier that can be placed in many places from a bedroom to a coffee shop. When you turn on the light, the light filters through the lampshade and shines onto the walls and objects in the room.
This concept is inspired by a phenomenon. If you stand between two mirrors, you will see many of you in the mirrors. So, I thought that maybe I could apply this to my lighting design to create an infinity effect.
4. Ideation
Based on the material and sketch models, I did some sketches to explore more about the cement and cotton concept.
5. 3D Model
11 inch
3 inch
5 inch
I used Shapr3D to make the model. the most challenging part of which was the lampshade. I needed to create a flowing shape that looks like liquid cement flowing down.
